On June 3, 1904, Charles Richard Drew was born in Washington D.C. to a middle class African American family. Even though he excelled at some of the best schools in the US and Canada, he suffered through segregation. Despite the hardship, he earned an athletic scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts.
Years later, he met Lorene Robbins, a home economics teacher and they got married on September 23, 1939. The new couple lived in New York where Mrs. Drew worked as a lab assistant until she became pregnant.
